Black Chaunsa Mango — The Rare Premium Cultivar

Black Chaunsa Mango — The Rare Premium Cultivar

In one paragraph
Black Chaunsa — known in Urdu as Kala Chaunsa (کالا چونسا) — is a rare, premium Chaunsa cultivar with distinctive dark red-purple skin (hence 'black'). Sweeter and more aromatic than common Chaunsa cultivars (some specimens reach 23–24° Brix — among the highest of any commercial mango). Limited production — only a handful of orchards in southern Punjab cultivate it commercially. Peak season late July through August. Often reserved for premium export and high-end domestic boutique markets.

Why "Black" when the flesh is golden?

The name refers to the skin color, not the flesh. Black Chaunsa skin turns deep red-purple-black when fully ripe, with occasional yellow patches. The dramatic color contrast with the typical pale-yellow White Chaunsa skin is what gives the variety its name.

Inside, the flesh is golden — actually deeper orange-gold than most other Chaunsa cultivars, with the densest flavor profile of any Pakistani mango.

Origin and rarity

Black Chaunsa is a relatively recent cultivar — most accounts trace it to the 1970s-80s, developed through selective breeding from heritage Chaunsa stock. The variety is genetically a Chaunsa, but with distinctive anthocyanin (red-purple pigment) accumulation in the skin.

Commercial cultivation is limited to a handful of orchards in southern Punjab — particularly in select areas around Multan, Khanewal, and Rahim Yar Khan. Total annual production is probably under 1% of total Pakistani mango harvest, making it genuinely rare.

Cultivation specifics

  • Annual yield per tree: 60–100 kg (lower than other Chaunsa variants)
  • Flowering: February
  • Harvest: Late July through August
  • Fruit weight: 250–400g
  • Brix at peak: 21–24° (highest among Pakistani mangoes)
  • Cultivation difficulty: Higher than standard Chaunsa — more susceptible to weather stress, lower yields

The lower yield per tree, combined with limited commercial cultivation, explains the premium pricing — Black Chaunsa in Pakistani retail commands Rs 800–1,200 per kg during peak season, vs Rs 400–600 for standard Chaunsa.

Flavor profile

Black Chaunsa is what happens when you push Chaunsa's natural character to its most concentrated form:

  • Aroma: Most intense of any Chaunsa cultivar — fills a room when ripe
  • Sweetness: 21–24° Brix — at the high end of any commercial mango globally
  • Flavor: Honey + jasmine + tropical floral + deeper fruit-rum notes
  • Texture: Silky, custard-like, almost spoonable when fully ripe
  • Finish: Extremely long aromatic finish

Where to find Black Chaunsa

Limited commercial availability. Look at:

  • High-end Pakistani fruit specialty stores in Karachi (Defence), Lahore (Cantt), Islamabad (F-7)
  • Some direct-from-farm Pakistani exporters (specifically targeted at premium customers)
  • Annual mango festivals at major Pakistani agricultural exhibitions
  • Specialty importers in Gulf/UAE

Our family farm doesn't currently grow Black Chaunsa commercially. Honestly: the cultivation challenges and lower yields make it a niche specialty better suited to specialized growers. If you specifically want Black Chaunsa, premium fruit specialty stores during late July through August are your best bet.

Is Black Chaunsa "better" than regular Chaunsa?

More concentrated, yes. "Better" — depends on what you mean. For the absolute mango aficionado who wants maximum flavor concentration: Black Chaunsa. For everyday eating, gifting, and most uses: White Chaunsa (Nawabpuri) delivers 95% of the experience at a more accessible price point.

The premium for Black Chaunsa pays for: rarity, breeding advances, lower yields. Whether that premium is worth it is personal preference.

FAQs

Is Black Chaunsa really black?

The skin is dark red-purple, sometimes very dark — described as "black" colloquially. The flesh inside is golden.

Why is Black Chaunsa so expensive?

Lower yield per tree, limited commercial cultivation, niche demand. Premium pricing reflects scarcity.

Where can I buy Black Chaunsa?

High-end fruit specialty stores in major Pakistani cities during late July–August. Or specialty Pakistani exporters in Gulf/UAE.

Is Black Chaunsa better than Nawabpuri Chaunsa?

More concentrated, yes. But Nawabpuri delivers 95% of the experience at lower price. The premium for Black is mostly for scarcity.

Is Kala Chaunsa the same as Black Chaunsa?

Kala Chaunsa (کالا چونسا) is simply the Urdu/Roman-Urdu name for Black Chaunsa — the same rare dark-skinned premium Chaunsa cultivar described above. "Kala" means black, referring to the deep red-purple skin. If you are searching for Kala Chaunsa, this is the variety.
